The Value of Friendship: Why is Jamal and Forrester’s friendship significant in the film?

Before meeting Forrester, Jamal was living according to what his environment was leading him to. As the movie shows, Jamal hides his good writing skills as if it was not soothing to be pound of. Instead, Jamal tries to fit in with his group of friend with basketball talent and grade C inside classroom. However, what really makes him happy is reading and writing. Having to hide his magnificent talent in writing, Jamal seems in his new friend someone who he could trust and count with to teach him how to do a better writing. In addition, Forrest was the first friend who would accept him for his talent in writing and not for his talent in basketball.
On the other side, Forrester, a lonely man who keeps family lost pain for 50 years. Avoiding any relationship because it might lead to pain, Forrester see in Jamal what a relationship is about. Nevertheless, this friendship changed Jamal and Forrester life. Forrester would never expect to learn so much about friendship from Jamal, as himself said that Jamal even surprises him. Because of Jamal, William Forrester finally overcome the pain that he kept for so long after losing his family and learned what a true friendship is.
They become really good friends after Jamal insistence of going to Forrester apartment every day, even though Forrester doesn’t like the idea of Jamal visiting every day. The most significant about this relationship is that Forrester believes in Jamal. He believes that he has the ability to write. Thus, their show that sometimes we can learn things from people we wouldn't expect to learn.

My favorite scene is when Forrester shows at Jamal’s school to read his letter and protect a friend from an accusation of plagiarism.

I like this scene because it shows how Forrester care about his friend Jamal. As Jamal has showing loyalty keep up his promise not mentioning anything about his friendship with Forrester, it was really nice from William to face all those people who were invent studying his book at the moment, to defend a friend.

My favorite quote is when Forrester start teaching Jamal how to become a better writer saying:

“You must write your first draft with your heart. You rewrite with your head. The first key to writing is... to write, not to think!”

This shows that Forrester believe that Jamal has ability to write and because of that he started to teach him to become a better writer.
